Blood Sugar and Hot Flashes: The Connection Most Women Miss
How Glucose Swings Can Fuel Heat, Night Sweats, and Hormone Chaos
When women think about hot flashes, they usually think about estrogen.
And yes, hormone shifts absolutely play a role.
But there is another piece that does not get talked about nearly enough:
Blood sugar.
Yep. That little glucose roller coaster may be contributing to the “why am I suddenly sweating through my pjs at 2 p.m.?” situation.
Many women in perimenopause are told hot flashes are just part of the deal. They are told to dress in layers, avoid spicy food, maybe consider hormone therapy, and carry on.
But what if your hot flashes are not only about hormones?
What if they are also connected to how your body is handling blood sugar, stress, meals, caffeine, alcohol, sleep, and minerals?
This is where things get interesting.
At C&C Holistic Living, I help women in perimenopause connect the dots between symptoms that often get treated as separate problems: weight gain, hot flashes, cravings, fatigue, bloating, sleep issues, and blood sugar swings.
Perimenopause Can Make Blood Sugar More Sensitive
During perimenopause, estrogen and progesterone fluctuate. These shifts can affect insulin sensitivity, stress hormones, sleep, appetite, cravings, and how your body responds to food.
That means the meals that used to work for you may not work the same way now.
You might notice that skipping breakfast suddenly makes you shaky or irritable. A glass of wine hits harder. Coffee on an empty stomach makes you anxious. A carb-heavy lunch leaves you crashing. Waking up at 3 a.m. becomes your body’s new hobby.
Blood sugar instability can show up as:
Hot flashes
Night sweats
Anxiety
Irritability
Sugar cravings
Energy crashes
Waking in the middle of the night
Headaches
Brain fog
Belly weight
Feeling shaky between meals
Needing caffeine to function
Of course, hot flashes can have multiple contributors. But blood sugar is one of the big ones I do not think women are educated on enough.
How Blood Sugar Swings Can Trigger Stress in the Body
When blood sugar drops too low or swings too dramatically, your body sees that as stress.
In response, it may release stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline to help bring glucose back up.
That internal stress response can feel like:
A rush of heat
Sweating
Heart racing
Anxiety
Waking suddenly at night
Feeling wired but tired
Irritability
Panic-like feelings
Sound familiar?
This is why some women notice hot flashes or night sweats after skipping meals, drinking alcohol, eating a sugary snack, having too much caffeine, or going too long without protein.
Your body is not being dramatic. It is trying to stabilize you.
Unfortunately, it often does this in a very rude and sweaty way. 😡
Breakfast Matters More Than You Think
One of the first things I look at with clients is breakfast.
Not because breakfast is magical, but because the way you start your day can set the tone for blood sugar for hours.
Many women are starting their day with coffee and either no food, a tiny breakfast, or something mostly carb-based.
That might look like:
Coffee only
A banana
Toast
Oatmeal with fruit
A protein bar that is basically a candy bar wearing a wellness costume
A smoothie without enough protein
A quick bite of their kid’s leftover breakfast
Then they wonder why they are anxious, craving sugar, crashing by afternoon, or getting hot flashes.
A better approach for many women is a protein-forward breakfast with healthy fat, fiber, and minerals.
The goal is not perfection. The goal is stability.
This is one of the foundational pieces I work on with clients inside my 1:1 nutrition and wellness programs, because blood sugar balance affects so much more than just weight. ⚖️
Alcohol, Caffeine, and Hot Flashes
This is where I lose some people.
But we have to talk about it.
Alcohol and caffeine can both affect blood sugar, sleep, stress hormones, and hot flashes.
That does not mean every woman needs to eliminate coffee or wine forever. I am not here to ruin your personal life 🤣
But if you are having frequent hot flashes, night sweats, poor sleep, anxiety, or weight loss resistance, it may be worth experimenting.
For some clients, moving coffee until after breakfast makes a huge difference. For others, reducing wine during the week helps sleep and night sweats.
Sometimes it is not about removing everything. It is about understanding your body’s threshold.
This is where accountability matters.
Because it is very easy to say, “I don’t think coffee affects me,” while drinking it on an empty stomach every morning and wondering why your nervous system feels like a squirrel in traffic. 🐿️
Client Pattern: Hot Flashes Improve When Blood Sugar Stabilizes
I have seen this pattern with clients many times.
A woman comes in focused on hormones, weight, and hot flashes. But when we look at her meals, she is under-eating protein, going too long between meals, snacking instead of eating balanced meals, drinking coffee before food, and eating dinner too late or too carb-heavy.
We start by stabilizing blood sugar.
We increase protein.
We build better breakfasts.
We reduce grazing.
We support minerals and hydration.
We balance meals.
We look at alcohol and caffeine timing.
We improve sleep routines.
And often, things begin shifting.
Energy improves. Cravings calm down. Mood feels steadier. Sleep improves. And yes, hot flashes may become less intense or less frequent.
This does not mean blood sugar is the only answer. But it is a major lever.
How C&C Holistic Living Helps
At C&C Holistic Living, I help women connect symptoms like hot flashes to the bigger root-cause picture.
We look at:
Blood sugar patterns
Meal timing
Protein intake
Digestive symptoms
Stress and sleep
Hormone patterns
Functional labs when needed
Food sensitivities or gut issues
Lifestyle factors that are quietly adding fuel to the fire
And then we create a plan that is practical.
Because the internet will give you 400 hot flash hacks. But without knowing what is driving your symptoms, you are just throwing spaghetti at the wall.
I help my clients clear the noise, prioritize what matters, and stay accountable to the small changes that actually move the needle.

Final Thoughts
Hot flashes are not always just “hormones being hormones.”
Blood sugar may be one of the most overlooked contributors, especially for women in perimenopause.
If you are dealing with hot flashes, night sweats, cravings, energy crashes, belly weight, or waking at 3 a.m., your body may be asking for more blood sugar support.
At C&C Holistic Living, I help women uncover the root causes behind perimenopause symptoms so they can stop guessing and start feeling more in control of their body again. Book a discovery call and let’s connect the dots.
